A kuffie is a head covering worn by Muslim men. Kuffie is a Arabic word for hat .There are different styles for making a kuffie. Today I am going to show you how to sew a pleated kuffie.
The first thing you need to do is measure the head and add an inch to the measurement. Lets say for example that the head measurement is 23''. So you would cut a piece of fabric that is 24'' long and 12 1/4'' wide. Fold the fabric in half lenth wise. Sew a 1/2 inch stitch down the edge of the fabric. Next turn the fabric to the right side and fold in half width wise in closing the seam, bring edges together and zigzag the ends. Start at one side of the seam an fold and pin1/2 pleats around to the other side of the seam.(see video 1). Sew over pleats 3/4 '' from the edge take pins out.
The circular patch.
Fold two small pieces of fabric in half. Draw a half circle about 3'' wide on the fold of the fabric. Cut to form a complete circle. Then sew a 3/4'' seam around the circle ,leaving a 1 inch opening. Turn inside out and press. Pin the patch over the pleats . Finally sew the patch down. Stitch near the edge of the patch. The kuffie can be worn as is or finished with six lines of decorative stitches on the edge of the hat.( See video 2).
